What Is a TAN?
TAN stands for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. It is a 10-character alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department to people and entities who deduct tax at source (TDS) or collect tax at source (TCS). You must quote it on TDS or TCS payments, returns and certificates. Once issued, the TAN stays with the deductor.
An Important Note Before You Apply
TAN is issued by the Income Tax Department. A CA helps you apply correctly. We do not issue TAN, and we cannot promise an exact delivery date.
TAN is different from PAN. A PAN identifies a taxpayer. A TAN identifies someone who deducts or collects tax for the government.
Do not apply twice. If you already have a TAN, apply for a correction, not a new one.
Beware of fake websites and agents who promise “instant TAN” or ask for extra payments. Apply only through official channels.
The government fee is set by the authorities and can change. Check the current amount on the official portal.
Who Needs a TAN?
Employers: Deduct TDS from employee salaries.
Businesses: Pay rent, professional fees or contractor charges subject to TDS.
Interest Payers: Deduct TDS on applicable interest payments.
Companies & LLPs: Make payments requiring TDS deduction.
Trusts & Societies: Deduct TDS where applicable.
TCS Collectors: Collect tax at source on eligible transactions.
Clinics & Professionals: Have staff or vendors with TDS obligations.
What to Do After You Get a TAN
Once you have a TAN, you generally need to:
Deduct TDS at the correct rate on eligible payments
Deposit it on time. The usual date is the 7th of the following month, but check the current rules
File TDS returns every quarter in the right form
Issue TDS certificates to the people you deducted from
Keep records of challans and returns
Late deposit or filing can bring interest and fees. For return and ongoing support, see our payroll processing, bookkeeping services and income tax return filing services. If you get a notice about TDS, see our income tax notice response service.
